Early Years
Curriculum
The Nursery and Reception classes both follow the new ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ curriculum. This considers the ‘whole child’ and is broken into 7 areas of development.
The Prime areas are:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Communication and Language
Physical Development
The Specific areas are:
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design
We don’t follow pre-set topics. Our planning is informed by observations of the children and reflects their current interests. As such, we provide child centred learning opportunities in a stimulating, vibrant and challenging learning environment, both indoors and out.
We promote learning through play. Children are encouraged to be independent learners, engaging in activities of their choice as well as adult structured play tasks to extend their skills and develop their learning characteristics.
All children in our Foundation Stage have ‘Learning Journey’ Folders that track their progress. These folders are shared with parents and contain detailed photographs, stories and work which are used to help assess individual needs.
We have friendly, happy Early Years classrooms and encourage lots parental involvement to welcome the whole family into our school.
Letters and Sounds:
Letters and sounds is the programme we follow at Barry Primary to support the principles and practice of high quality phonics.
The link below will take you to a video to support pronunciation of the pure sounds we use.
