INTENT
Music is an important curriculum subject. Music is all around us. It is the soundtrack to our lives. Music connects us through people and places in our ever-changing world.
It is creative, collaborative, celebratory and challenging. In school, music can bring communities together through the shared endeavour of whole-school singing, ensemble playing, experimenting with the creative process and, through the love of listening to friends and fellow pupils, performing. We believe everyone should have the skills and understanding to access music; to express and create, to enrich and, if desired, to follow a music-based career.
IMPLEMENTATION
At Barry Primary we teach music weekly from Nursery to Year 6. The children are taught to sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate, through the structured music programme; Kapow Music. This is supplemented by weekly singing assembles, concerts, performances, musical clubs and teaching by specialist music teachers. We work closely with NMPAT (Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust) and the children have the opportunity to learn an instrument in Key Stage 2 (fees apply) including violin, cello, flute, clarinet, cornet, trombone, tenor horn, baritone, guitar and drums. During key stage two, the children also experience two whole-class instrumental units such as Samba, Recorder, Ukulele or African drumming.
IMPACT
Children are exposed to the four key concepts in music (perform, compose, transcribe & describe) as they progress through the year groups. As a result, children are given the opportunity to compose and perform their own pieces, appreciate the processes involved in making music and are able to describe the effectiveness of musical elements.
CREATIVITY
Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. All children can access this creativity by making musical choices and responses.
ASPIRATION
Through watching and listening to high quality performances from a variety of genres, children can be inspired to play and create their own music and aspire to improve their own abilities.
RESPECT
Performing and playing as a group requires teamwork; listening to each other and appreciating different forms and genres of music. This all promotes respect.
ENJOYMENT
With largely practical lessons, the children enjoy making music together. They have the opportunity to experience the elation of a good performance after hard work and practice.
The Big Sing 9th March 2022
Well done to the children who performed at the Derngate on Wednesday evening, as part of the Big Sing. We were very proud of them; they sang brilliantly and were a credit to the school.
They had a long day; starting with walking to the Derngate from school and then rehearsing with all the other schools involved before performing ten different Disney songs to a large audience.
They have been learning the songs, in school, since January and there were lots of words and actions to remember.
