Computing - learning journey
Intent
Our Computing curriculum will develop children’s confidence and ability to prepare them for a rapidly developing and changing technological world.
At Barry Primary School, we want children’s experiences of computing to help them appreciate it as an essential tool for learning, communication, finding information and for controlling and understanding their environment.
We offer a curriculum that is broad, rich and deep as well as being sequenced, successfully adapted, designed and developed for all pupils.
Barry pupils are developed to be computational thinkers, through the teaching of 3 sections: computer science, information technology and digital literacy. We endeavour to keep children safe online and provide them with the knowledge and tools to do so as well as becoming computer literate.
Implementation
Utilising the ‘Teach Computing’ curriculum, computing at Barry Primary school is taught in a spiral format. This allows children to continually build on prior learning and reduce the time between linked units enabling them to retain their learning better.
A new unit of computing is taught in every half term and in doing so, covers the national curriculum in greater detail. Furthermore, computing lessons are taught weekly and within other areas of the curriculum to research and present information.
We want to ensure that computing is embedded within school and used efficiently and safely.
Impact
Children enjoy computing in our school and are taught to understand and appreciate the need and uses of computers.
Children will understand and appreciate the value of Computing in the context of their personal wellbeing and the technological, creative and cultural industries and their many career opportunities. Progress within computing is tracked in a variety of ways:
-Observing and assessing the work produced in each lesson.
-Conversing with children in lessons.
-Observing how they get on within lessons and how they communicate about their learning with others.
Some of the work is also uploaded on to Seesaw as further evidence of the childrens’ progress
Subject Overview
CREATIVITY
Children have the opportunity to use technology to be creative. They will create and edit music, web-pages, videos. They will also use programming tools to create games and move robots. Computing pushes our pupils’ creativity and challenges the concept that ‘you can only be creative if you are good at Art’.
ASPIRATION
Computing will give children to experience the vast array of ways we use technology and prepare them for jobs that will incorporate these: astronauts, designers, football analysts etc. There are few jobs where technology is not a crucial part of the job, therefore, we give children the core tools they will undoubtedly need to prosper in the world around them as they get older.
RESPECT
Computing teaches children how to communicate with others online. With access to technology more widely available, we promote positive use of all forms of technology so that children are safe online and respect other users they come across, as they become more confident using and exploring computers.
Enjoyment
Children are taught how to design web-pages and games, store and organise information, communicate and analyse information with others. Pupils enjoy being creative and understanding the digital world through discussion and practical lessons with a constant focus on using technology safely.
