Personal, Social and Health Education - learning journey

PSHE

Intent

The Barry Personal, Social, Heath and Economic curriculum is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, as well as developing the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually. Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life. Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever-changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community.

Implementation

To ensure a depth and accuracy of learning which builds upon prior learning, all classes undertake weekly PSHE lessons which follow Jigsaw, a fully planned and spiralling/progressive PSHE scheme.

Jigsaw consists of six half-term units of work (Puzzles), each containing six lessons (Pieces) covering each academic year.

Term 1: Being Me in My World

Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

Term 3: Dreams and Goals

Term 4: Healthy Me (Including first aid)

Term 5: Relationships

Term 6: Changing Me

Each lesson is built upon a Charter which underpins the behaviour and respect that is the basis for each lesson. The lessons then split into 6 parts, all of which are included in every session to ensure that the learning follows the optimum progression. In addition to this, teachers have the freedom to plan with detail and attention to their individual children. Learners can be scaffolded, and any individual needs are supported where necessary.

impact

Assessment in Jigsaw is both formative and summative. The two clear learning objectives for each lesson (piece) allow teachers to be mindful of the assessment elements within that session that can formatively help them pitch and plan subsequent lessons, and activities are included in each lesson to give the children the opportunity to self-assess using simple pictorial resources designed in a child-friendly, age appropriate manner. It also allows children of 6 and over the opportunity to identify areas for self-improvement.

As Jigsaw PSHE is a whole-school approach, rather than simply a lesson-a-week Scheme of Work for PSHE, there are numerous layers built in that engender a sense of belonging and community, and that value every individual, for example: praising one attitude or behaviour each week through the Weekly celebration assemblies and the respect award. Through the children’s values and our school rules “Ready, Respectful, Safe”.

At Barry Primary School we use Jigsaw to provide our pupils with the skills to lead a successful and happy life in modern day Britain.

Subject Overview and RSE Policy

CREATIVITY

The jigsaw curriculum inspires and celebrates individuality. The learners have the opportunities throughout PSHE to be creative, whilst developing positive relationships and enhancing collaborative learning.

ASPIRATION

PSHE will allow the children to strive towards their hopes and dreams for the future. They will discuss how it feels when dreams don’t come true and how to cope with/overcome feelings of disappointment.  The children will learn about the importance of money and reflect on the types of jobs they might like to do when they are older.

Respect

PSHE will allow children to explore the similarities and differences between people and how these make us unique and special. They will be taught to understand physical contact boundaries and safe adults to seek help from. Children will discuss bullying and friendship issues and how to deal with them.  The children consider happiness regardless of material wealth and respecting other people’s cultures.

Enjoyment

The PSHE jigsaw curriculum will provide learners with the opportunities to have a ready willingness and ability to try new things, to push themselves and persevere.
